Adapt > Engage > Dominate

The write protected message apparently comes up sometimes even if the drive and nothing on it is marked read-only (Win7 64-bit, but most likely also works in Vista).  This prevented cutting and even copying files from the drive.  The solution was as follows:

  1. Open an Administrative command prompt
  2. diskpart
  3. list disk
  4. select disk # (where # is the disk you want to fix)
  5. detail disk (to see additional detail (optional))
  6. attributes disk clear readonly
